The holidays often cause people to think about giving. Here’s something interesting facts about giving in the United States:

  • LAST YEAR AMERICANS GAVE $410.2 BILLION TO CHARITY (BREAKING ALL PREVIOUS RECORDS)

  • ONE THIRD (31%) OF ANNUAL GIVING OCCURS IN DECEMBER

  • 12% OF ALL GIVING HAPPENS IN THE LAST THREE DAYS OF THE YEAR

  • 28% OF NONPROFITS RAISE AS MUCH AS 50% OF THEIR FUNDING IN DECEMBER

In addition to helping good causes, it turns out that generosity is good for your health. Bethany Ivie in this article has identified the following health benefits of giving.

Even if this year you are not able to give much financially, there are other ways to show support for organizations. The two most powerful are giving our time or sharing our influence. You can donate your time to serve your favorite non-profits who are always is need of help or you can use your influence by sharing their efforts on social media. Start a Facebook fundraiser or take your family to serve!

“December provides us a very special opportunity to celebrate those individuals, groups and organizations who invest their lives in charity. As you know, nonprofits provide critical relief to the hurting, hungry and helpless, develop support for much needed social reforms and improve every aspect of civil society including health, the arts and education.” shares https://nationalgivingmonth.org/.

Our collective generosity demonstrates that we as a society can support, care for and meet needs in many different areas. The gift in giving is that we can each focus our efforts on those issues that we have specific passion and concern for. The fact is that through our giving, we are given so much.

“Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give.”
―Eleanor Roosevelt

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
―Winston S. Churchill
